The Green Office of the Federal University of Technology of Paraná (UTFPR) was conceived and designed by Prof. Dr. Eloy Casagrande Jr and was opened in 2011, in Curitiba, Brazil, in order to promote sustainable development within education. The project was elaborated within the principles of sustainable construction to be the first "carbon zero building" of the university and to serve as a "green living laboratory". It became viable when the university signed cooperation agreements with over 60 companies, who donated green materials and sustainable technologies. It was the first building of the Paraná state to have solar photovoltaic energy connected to the power grid. The project received the award for the best practices for sustainable development education from the United Nations University-UNU in 2012 and also the national prize "Santander Sustainability" in the same year.
